The surface of the spring lock washers must be smooth and free from scale and burr. The spring lock washers must be coiled without kinks and their outer edges must be sharp or at the most lightly rounded.

The spring lock washers are to be supplied lightly greased. Subject to agreement, they may also be with supplied with surface protection, e.g. with phosphate rust inhibitor according to DIN 50942 or with electrolytically deposited surface protection according to DIN 267 Part 9. In the case of spring lock washer with electrolytically deposited surface protection suitable methods of treatment must be adopted to ensure that no hydrogen embrittlement occurs.
