1-1.1 Part 1 contains the definitions used in this standard. Parts 2, 3, and 4 contain the requirements necessary to receive accreditation from The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) which must be met by manufacturers and alteration distributors of fasteners, non-alteration distributors of fasteners, and fastener testing laboratories. Part 5 contains the administrative requirements for obtaining third party accreditation from ASME.

1-1.2 FAP-1 includes all the requirements established by ISO 9001 – Quality Systems – Model for Quality Assurance in design/development, production, installation, and servicing. Also included in FAP-1 are additional requirements for fiscal responsibility. FAP-1 is written in terminology specific to the fastener industry. It is unique in that it provides quality management and quality system elements for fastener distributors.
